I’ve always been curious about how things work, which is what draws me to science, but I also love expressing how I see the world through creativity.

Through photography, creating, and helping shelter dogs get noticed and find homes, I’ve found different ways to explore what I care about and make a difference.

Community service

I’ve been part of the Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Programme since 2022. I have learned that every act, big or small, can make a difference. Meaningful change starts with paying attention, taking responsibility, and working as a team.

Through the program, I have helped organize local service projects and I am working toward becoming an animator: a youth leadership role focused on mentoring young people and helping them turn their ideas into action.

Food for the homeless

Over the years, I have made, packaged, and handed out meals in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to the less fortunate.

Care packages in Vancouver

A focus for this group has been helping the women’s shelter and the food bank. I packaged and delivered important necessities for the women’ shelter, as well as raised money through bake sales and bottle drives for them and the food bank.

Senior Home

I helped make cards, play bingo, hand out snacks, and build connections with the seniors.

Junior Youth Animator

The next step I am training for is becoming an animator. Being an animator takes leadership skills, passion, hard work, and dedication. I am more than ready to take on this role and to mentor a young group week after week, help them read, learn the importance of teamwork, and give back to their community.

Curiosity in practice

Science is how I make sense of the world.

I have always been fascinated with the way the world and how our bodies work. Mathematics, human anatomy, chemistry, and the systems that connect them are the patterns beneath what we can see. There is science in everything around us, and when you think about it on a deeper level it becomes beautiful. Photography wouldn't be possible without the study of chemistry and physics. Science gives me a way to ask better questions about what I am seeing.

As I prepare for university, I am exploring paths that bring together scientific thinking, problem solving,and creativity. I am excited by the possibility of studying in a field where I can share this passion with those around me and keep learning to someday help people.

Biology / Human anatomy

I am deeply fascinated about human anatomy and strive to learn deeply about the intricate design of our bodies and work towards keeping them healthy and alive. Biology is what connects it all, bringing together form, movement, and function. My vision is to learn and work in the health care industry.

Mathematics

I love how mathematics can turn something complicated into something that makes sense. There is always a different way to look at a problem, and math always makes you stop and think.

Chemistry

What I enjoy about Chemistry is that there are countless possibilities and chemical compounds. Tiny molecular changes can completely change the outcome of a situation. It reminds me that even things we can’t see have a huge impact on the world around us

I design posters and write descriptions for social media posts to help adoptable dogs find their forever homes. A lot of shelter photos are hurried, which is why I try to make each dog’s poster showcase their unique personalities that may catch someone’s attention.

Hi — I’m Myra.

A lot of what I do comes from the things that I genuinely care about. I enjoy learning, creating, and finding ways to help where I can. I spend my time at school helping run clubs, organizing events, and being a helping hand to peers and teachers. I like being involved in my school community and helping out in any way I can.

Outside of school I design posters for dogs needing homes to get them adopted, visit senior homes, raise money for the food bank, deliver food to people experiencing homelessness, make care packages for the women’ shelter, and so much more. Volunteering with shelter dogs has been especially meaningful to me because I get to be the voice for those who don’t have one.
